His death was announced on 21 September by the Court of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Dubai has declared 10 days of official mourning, with flags to be flown at half-mast across the emirate.

Sheikh Ahmed was the fourth and youngest son of Dubai’s late ruler Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum and the younger brother of Sheikh Mohammed. Alongside his role as Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security, he served as second deputy ruler of Dubai and held senior positions in business and sport.

UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan offered his condolences to Sheikh Mohammed, recognising Sheikh Ahmed’s longstanding contribution to the development of the UAE since its founding.

Sheikh Mohammed also paid tribute to his brother, describing him in a post on X as absent from their eyes but remaining in their prayers and hearts.

Sheikh Ahmed’s public service included a long association with Dubai’s security institutions. In 2021, he provided philanthropic support through Dubai Police and Public Security towards the establishment of the Hamdan Bin Rashid Cancer Charity Hospital through the Al Jalila Foundation.
