  • Advanced 3D screening technology is being rolled out across all three DXB terminals, allowing laptops and liquids to remain inside bags.
  • High-resolution imaging is designed to strengthen screening while improving passenger flow and reducing processing times.
  • Smiths Detection is supplying the security screening technology, as part of Dubai Airports’ wider programme of continuous infrastructure upgrades.

The technology is being introduced as part of an ongoing programme to upgrade DXB’s security screening infrastructure while improving passenger flow and operational efficiency.

Dubai Airports awarded Smiths Detection a contract in May 2025 to implement its advanced checkpoint screening technologies across the airport’s three terminals. The implementation is now underway, with new screening machines already operating at DXB.

The technology uses high-resolution 3D imaging to provide security personnel with a detailed view of the contents of passengers’ bags. This enables laptops, liquids and other electronic devices to remain inside luggage during the screening process.

Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths said the investment was helping make the security process “slicker, quicker, faster, and more convenient”, while maintaining the security requirements associated with passenger screening.

The new technology is designed to reduce the need for passengers to remove items such as liquids and laptops from their bags. Griffiths also said the requirement to remove belts and shoes would become a thing of the past as the airport continues to upgrade its screening processes.

The programme forms part of a wider, ongoing investment in DXB’s infrastructure. Griffiths said the airport is undertaking a gradual programme of continuous upgrades, with new screening equipment being introduced alongside other changes to the passenger environment.

The deployment also reflects the increasing role of advanced imaging technology in airport security. By generating three-dimensional images of baggage contents, the new screening systems are intended to provide security screening capabilities while reducing the physical handling and unpacking of passenger belongings.

Smiths Detection is supplying the security screening machinery, while EmaratTech is delivering new immigration technology at the airport.

According to Dubai Airports, the technology is already being introduced across DXB as the implementation programme progresses.

The deployment highlights how advances in checkpoint screening can combine security requirements with improved operational efficiency. Rather than relying on passengers to separate individual items for inspection, high-resolution imaging enables security screening to take place with more of the baggage remaining intact.

The rollout is part of Dubai Airports’ continuing investment in DXB, with further infrastructure and passenger-facing upgrades planned as the airport continues its programme of development.
